A bettor made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro just before it was officially announced, sparking debate about potential gains made from non-public details of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be removed from office by the close of the month surged in the hours before President Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that Maduro had been taken into custody.

One account, which registered on the site in December and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a initial bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before News Break

Market statistics shows that traders assessed the probability of a political change at just 6.5% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

However the market's assessment had climbed to 11% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the morning of Saturday, suggesting a sharp shift in betting activity right before the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a bet based on non-public details," commented Dennis Kelleher.

Several of other platform users also earned significant sums from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Intensifies

Elected officials are starting to take note.

A new rule presented on Monday aims to prohibit public officials from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in recent years, with traders able to predict everything from elections to politics.

The industry were examined under the previous administration. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Insider trading is against the law in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting arena.

A company executive for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
