Instructor Fatally Shot and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Firefight at School in Nigeria
Armed assailants have killed a teacher and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an attack on a girls' secondary school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, according to police.
The gang of attackers stormed the public educational institution for female students in Maga, Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on Monday, officials stated.
The attackers "confronted officers on duty in a shootout" before breaching the school's outer barrier and taking the pupils captive from their dormitory, according to a statement.
One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now being treated medically.
Observers recounted a sizeable number of assailants, referred to locally as criminal elements, who came shooting randomly to generate terror.
Community members disclosed to media that the attackers afterwards forced a group of female students into adjacent wilderness.
The police said they had deployed "extra specialized police forces, together with army members and local protection units" to the area.
