Jurgen Klopp states a return to manage Liverpool is plausible in theory.
Jurgen Klopp, who stepped down from Liverpool in 2024, indicated that returning someday remains an option. The 58-year-old, post a game-changing near-decade reign which brought a European Cup triumph and the Premier League crown for three decades, currently occupies positions as head of global soccer within the Red Bull organization and providing guidance for the DFL.
Fan Sentiment and His Frank Comments
The club claimed the Premier League under Arne Slot, though countless followers holding him in high esteem would be thrilled by the idea that he might come back one day. In a wide-ranging interview, he explained to Steven Bartlett: “I declared I won't manage a different club within the country. Therefore in case it's my former club...absolutely. Theoretically it’s possible.”
“At 58 years old, so I could make the decision down the line, I don’t know. Must I choose now? In that case, I'd stay away. But thank God, I don’t have to do that. I can just see what the future brings.”
Conditions for a Comeback
When asked about which situations would need to occur to tempt his return to management, Klopp admitted he feels no immediate pull for a comeback. “I don’t even know exactly, I love what I do right now,” he said. “No longing for management; No desire to be during downpours through long matches; I don’t miss going to press conferences four times, three times a week or constant media duties weekly.
“No nostalgia for the changing area per se, but sitting in a restaurant with the players enjoying conversation, that’s nice. With many victories so there was often positive atmosphere at the club. I still have Van Dijk's laughter vividly recalled to illustrate.”
Commending Arne Slot
Klopp was full of praise regarding Arne Slot, praising him due to the changes that won the league last term. Liverpool have lost four consecutive matches across various tournaments following significant transfers, though he denied the notion that it might signal the start of a downward turn.
“[Liverpool have] a phenomenal forward in Flo[rian] Wirtz, doubters will be silenced with negative comments. He’s an incredible talent. The French striker, superb talent. They have a strong balanced team. You don’t have to worry over the club, they will be fine.”
Emotional Tribute for Diogo Jota
Klopp also spoke emotionally about the death of the Portuguese star, whom he brought in during his tenure, and its impact for the team. Jota died tragically in a road accident together with his sibling in July.
“How do you replace a person like him? It goes beyond his footballing ability, it's his character. It's hard to picture the squad absent his presence. Putting it into words is tough regarding this. A devastating blow for all the boys too. Nobody at Liverpool would cite it to justify results though it's a fact. Entering the changing area which he filled completely. Dealing with that on a personal level is not easy. Impossible.”
