Much like the recent storm hit the north-west the night before, Manchester City blew United away at the their home ground. It was a convincing three goal victory for Andrée Jeglertz’s side owing to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a result that firmly established their title credentials as they consolidated their place at the WSL pinnacle.

Consecutive Setbacks for Manchester United

This scoreline marked back-to-back WSL defeats for Skinner's side for the first time since May 2024, placing them a sizable gap off the top team with their championship aspirations severely dented.

United’s ability to manage league and European soccer with a limited squad has been a widely debated issue since they qualified for the European competition. Looking at the schedule, it always felt like this was the matchday that would seriously challenge this ability. Regrettably for the opposition, they looked fatigued throughout, the memorable win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having taken a toll.

Lineup Adjustments

Marc Skinner had tried to rotate the squad with a several changes. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all brought energy, although the exclusion of the on-form Malard to the sidelines raised a few eyebrows.

The hosts, in comparison, have no such loading concerns. Jeglertz made a single alteration from last week’s win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her first start since returning from a physical setback.

Overpowering Start

The pressure started to build for Skinner and his team from the opening minute. This was a show of the strength from City whose dynamic attack manipulated and pulled the visitors apart with a superb opening period performance that saw them put three past the keeper in 21 minutes.

This put the hosts in a commanding position and saw the visitors all at sea. Prior to this fixture, the away side had conceded just few in this domestic competition but they fell apart in the presence of Manchester City's offensive ingenuity.

Early Chances

The warning signs came quickly when Vivianne Miedema used her physicality to bundle Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to drag her shot wide. Lauren Hemp was at the core of everything from the start, taking advantage of the gap left by Riviere down United’s wing. Her deliveries were creating danger and led to an opportunity for Yui Hasegawa that Sandberg cleared off the line.

United had several attacks forwards, their long-ball tactic giving them options in the wings but they could not trouble Ayaka Yamashita. Manchester City, meanwhile, dominated possession, teasing their opposition and trying to draw them out of their organization.

Scoring Spree

They made their pressure count with almost thirty minutes played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a set-piece. A ball to the back post was directed across goal by Shaw for Knaak to score. It was Manchester City's seventh headed goal of the term.

They added to their lead with two more goals just before the interval. When Rose was permitted to advance through the middle from the back, the play opened up for the hosts. The prominent Kerstin Casparij received possession on the right side before providing a precise driven ball for Shaw to tap home. Four minutes later, they had a third after a quick turnover in the ball saw Hemp allowed the space to strike a shot home from distance.

Final Period

The primary substitution came from the United manager at the interval as Melvine Malard came on for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was too late to change the course of the game. Former City player Jess Park came nearest, rattling the upright, but the visitors were offensively poor and did not manage to record a one shot on goal.

The hosts, on the other hand, could have added to their advantage when a superb Vivianne Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it was insignificant to the winning team. After failing to beat any side who finished above them in the prior term, Jeglertz’s side now have successes against Arsenal and United to place them in a favorable position after nine matches.
