New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he has been listed as critical but stable.

“Still unsure,” the coach said. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”

Authorities issued surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims were reported.

The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a child.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd did not participate this season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be a key part of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
