A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The president announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.

Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
