The Duchess of Sussex has claimed that the Daily Mail crossed "obvious ethical boundaries" by reporting from the bedside of her estranged father, after his assertions that he had not gotten his daughter's messages.

A Public Appeal and a Private Struggle

Meghan's father publicly asked Meghan to see him in a recent newspaper interview, following having serious surgery in the Philippines.

Nonetheless, a spokesperson for Meghan stated that she had been attempting to reach her father and censured the publication's conduct.

"Considering a journalist from the outlet has remained at her father’s side the entire time, publicizing each interaction and breaching obvious ethical boundaries, it has been extremely hard for the duchess to contact her father in private, despite her attempts over the past several days," the representative stated. "Thanks to trusted contacts, her message is now safely in his hands."

Publisher's Rebuttal

A spokesperson for the parent company of the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday rejected any ethical breach and said that Mr. Markle was a longtime acquaintance of the journalist who interviewed him.

"When Thomas Markle was taken ill in the Philippines he contacted the journalist and asked her travel to be with him," stated the spokesperson. "Not only is she a journalist, she has been friends with Mr Markle for years. She has been with Mr Markle in hospital every day, offering him care and support."

The spokesperson added, "The claim is completely false that each exchange has been publicized, and the allegation that ethical boundaries were violated is patently untrue and strongly contested."

Background of Estrangement

The dispute follows a tense few days in which Meghan is reported to have been attempting to reach her father. Her team claim they had struggled to find him or find a way to communicate with him privately.

Meghan has been distant from her father since 2018, when she married Prince Harry. The father-daughter bond soured further when a private letter she wrote to him, parts of which were published in the Sunday paper, an act she said "actually signalled the end of our relationship, not a reconciliation."

Forthcoming Court Case

This disagreement comes weeks before the Duke of Sussex is scheduled to start a lawsuit against the publisher of the Daily Mail over allegations of unlawful information gathering.

In that trial, scheduled for next month, the publisher is being sued by Prince Harry and a group of high-profile figures. The claimants allege the newspaper group carried out unlawful activities. The publisher strongly disputes all allegations.
