The Mayor-Elect affirms he will reside in the iconic Gracie Mansion
The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate in his election bid.
An Iconic Home
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors from the post-war period.
But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central issue, hesitated to declare this decision right away following his triumph in November.
"This decision came down to the security of my family and the imperative to dedicating all of my focus on carrying out the affordability agenda the city's residents elected me on," stated Mamdani in his announcement.
Leaving Astoria
Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district renowned for its abundance of immigrant populations and global cuisine.
"To Astoria: many thanks for showing us the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Even though I'm moving there, it will forever remain a part of me and the work I do," he said.
Campaign Controversy
During his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his core platform – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
However his opponents, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the apartment although he is from a prominent family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a space for civic gatherings, and championed an extensive renovation of the older mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings a stark contrast to his previous Astoria home.
Adorned in pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.
Within, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated consistent with the home's historical period.
The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, meaning the city regulates on how much property owners can increase rent each year.
City residents view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the housing expenses exceeds the means of many residents.
It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
