The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It features our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
Overall, the intro appears stunning. However, I felt that an element was missing in the music selection.
This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song created by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.
Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on Spotify and YouTube.
