Those A$150 Million Men Transforming a Human Highlight Reel
This year's NBA campaign begins this week, marking the initial occasion in a decade that Australia's two biggest hoops names – Ben Simmons and Patty Mills – are teamless.
Their absence signals a transition period, as Boomers’ backcourt duo Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels step up as key starters for playoff aspirants, with recently signed nine-figure contracts making them some of the country's highest athletic earners.
They aren't the only ones. Fourteen Australians are expected to play for playing time around the league, including experienced big men Jock Landale and Duop Reath, up-and-coming forwards in Johnny Furphy and Josh Green, to promising rookies like Tyrese Proctor and Rocco Zikarsky.
Josh Giddey Aiming to Show His Worth
Following lengthy negotiations with the Chicago Bulls, Giddey ultimately signed his new deal worth $100m ($153m) over four seasons last month. It’s a huge contract for the Melbourne native, but in league standards it is affordable for his role and profile as a lead playmaker. The reluctance for the Bulls management to pay top dollar means the 23-year-old enters this year with a point to make.
Having been traded by the Thunder at the beginning of last campaign, Giddey watched as his old team stormed to the NBA championship without him. As the Bulls aim to reach the postseason in the less competitive Eastern Conference, he will need to demonstrate his shooting and defensive skills are elite-level or else he may slide towards the league's outskirts.
Dyson Daniels Eyes Another Step
The guard agreed to the same deal as Giddey this week, and after his most-improved player award last season, the Atlanta player's trajectory has taken off in Atlanta following his exit from the New Orleans. He is now lauded as one of the NBA's best defensive specialists, and led the league in takeaways with three per game – over one full takeaway per match higher than the total of the runner-up.
Playing next to dynamic Trae Young in the Hawks, the 22-year-old can be successful this campaign as a secondary ballhandler and defensive stopper as long as the Hawks make the playoffs. But if he can elevate his three-point shooting, which was subpar last season, and keep enhance his passing and driving, Daniels could become one of the association's most versatile talents.
Johnny Furphy A Dunking Sensation
Indiana wing Furphy has emerged as a fan favourite in the state following a series of spectacular slam dunks in pre-season. His athletic displays led league figure Pat Beverley to label him as the “best white dunker we’ve seen in a long time”, and an invite to the All-Star dunk contest could be a possibility.
Following playing just 8 mpg per game over 50 appearances in his rookie campaign, the former college player is in the running for a Indiana lineup that might favor young players following injury to lead guard Tyrese Haliburton.
Tyrese Proctor An Outside Shot
Playmaker the Sydney native dropped in the NBA Draft down to the second round, where playoff hopefuls Cleveland selected him. The Cavaliers are favourites to reach the NBA finals from the East, so it would be unusual for a rookie drafted in the second round to see significant playing minutes. But the Australian has seen minutes in pre-season, and his NBA-ready shot gives him a opportunity to make an impact.
Minutes Crunch Ahead for Experienced Group
Seasoned centre Jock Landale has a opportunity to claim the starting centre position in the Grizzlies given highly-touted Zach Edey will miss the opening of the season after a surgical procedure.
In the Trail Blazers, Duop Reath is the experienced reserve to youthful big men Donovan Clingan and Yang Hansen, but could play regular minutes if the team become competitive. His teammate Matisse Thybulle is expected to be deployed as a defensive spark in a reserve role.
In Charlotte, Josh Green’s summer shoulder procedure has resulted in him without a timeline to come back. The player still has a deal for next season, but will not want to give his colleagues at the rebuilding Hornets too much head start. And a physical issue has already hindered Dante Exum, who has a knee complaint and has missed key exhibition opportunities in the Mavericks.
Australian NBA Players On the Fringe
Additionally, there are those who are not expected to see much, if any, court time this year. Veteran Joe Ingles is back in Minnesota, but appears to be primarily a big brother keeping Anthony Edwards in check.
Rocco Zikarsky is likely to be nurtured by Minnesota Timberwolves through their affiliate team. Other first-year players Lachlan Olbrich in the Bulls and Alex Toohey for the Warriors are also in the development pipeline, while the experienced Luke Travers will be hoping to win minutes alongside his compatriot for the Cavaliers.
Ben Simmons and Patty Mills Fish for a Deal
Should anyone question Mills was planning to end his career, he addressed it with a workout video posted on his accounts recently, showing the veteran is still in form and focused on securing another NBA contract.
What Simmons is thinking is anyone’s guess after an off-season in Australia, going fishing and playing with a football. Even though he posted on social media recently to deny suggestions he was retired, the former All-Star – an All Star as recently as 2021 – has yet to return to the league.
