The distinctive yellow-colored residential building visible behind helped us verify the footage.

Our team is verifying video footage and photographs posted this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials state killed a senior soldier in Moscow.

Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he later died to his injuries. A probe is under way.

The initial step to verify the site of where the images were from relied on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building captured in the footage.

Locating other structures, streetlights and the street layout confirmed the exact location the footage were captured.

We also checked that the video clips were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
